14 WA Starbucks stores join national Red Cup Rebellion strike - The Seattle Times

Starbucks workers at 200 locations nationwide, including 14 in Washington, are planning to strike Thursday on one of the company’s busiest days, according to the union representing the workers.

The workers are calling for the coffee giant to bargain over issues including staffing and scheduling, said the union, Starbucks Workers United.

In Washington, nearly 380 Starbucks workers at the 14 locations planned to join the strike on Thursday. The locations are in Seattle, Shoreline, Bellingham, Marysville, Everett, Olympia, Tumwater, Vancouver and Redmond.

Seattle locations at Fifth and Pike downtown, at the Reserve Roastery on Capitol Hill, at Seattle Center, at Third and Madison, and at University Way are likely to have limited hours or close Thursday. The Reserve Roastery opened at 11 a.m. Thursday, later than its regular 7 a.m.

A similar Red Cup Rebellion strike last year was the largest the union has organized since stores began a union campaign late 2021. The union expected this year’s Red Cup strike to impact more than double the stores as last year’s.

The walkouts are so named because they are taking place on Red Cup Day, a yearly event that draws one of the highest sales of the year for the Seattle-based coffee giant. Customers can get a free reusable red Starbucks cup with the purchase of a holiday drink.
