1,482 Whistleblower Complaints Lodged Since 2020, Says Azalina - BusinessToday Malaysia

The government has received 1,482 complaints under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Act 711) between 2020 and 2024, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

In a Parliamentary reply yesterday, she stressed that the law guarantees confidentiality for whistleblowers, ensuring their identities remain protected during investigations, enforcement actions and court proceedings.

“Under Section 8 of Act 711, the law clearly stipulates that the identity and details of whistleblowers, including any information that could lead to their identification, must remain confidential at every stage of the process. This protection covers investigations, enforcement action, and court proceedings,” Azalina said.

She noted that Parliament had recently passed amendments to strengthen the Act by expanding its scope and improving reporting mechanisms.

Azalina was responding to Jerlun MP Abd Ghani Ahmad, who asked about the effectiveness of the Act in protecting whistleblowers. She added that all investigations must be conducted in line with strict procedures.
