A former top executive at Meta, Sarah Wynn-Williams, has come forward with serious allegations against the company, claiming it compromised US national security in order to build a profitable business relationship with China.
Wynn-Williams made the explosive claims during a congressional hearing chaired by Senator Josh Hawley of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism. According to her, Meta executives made intentional decisions that gave the Chinese Communist Party access to user data, including that of American citizens.
She also alleged that Meta worked closely with Beijing to build censorship tools that helped the Chinese government control online content and suppress dissent. “Meta worked hand in glove with Beijing,” she added.
“I saw Meta executives repeatedly undermine US national security and betray American values,” she said in her opening remarks, according to CBS.
Senator Hawley accused Meta of trying to block her from testifying.
Wynn-Williams went on to say, “The greatest trick Mark Zuckerberg ever pulled was wrapping the American flag around himself and calling himself a patriot… while he spent the last decade building an $18 billion business [in China].”
