ANN ARBOR, MI — Two Ann Arbor City Council members are facing scrutiny after an independent investigator raised concerns in a new report about their communications with the city’s human resources director.
City-hired investigator Jennifer Salvatore’s 12-page report released this week cleared Assistant City Administrator John Fournier of wrongdoing but raised concerns about two council members in an “Additional Observations” section, saying they disclosed information from a closed-session council meeting.
The two council members are not identified in the report, but Elizabeth Nelson, D-4th Ward, and Ali Ramlawi, D-5th Ward, acknowledge Salvatore is talking about them and they both claim the situation is being misportrayed.
“Prior to release of this report, I alerted the city attorney’s office that allegations in it were defamatory to me and include speculation that is factually wrong,” Nelson said.
Ramlawi said he finds it “extremely troubling” that the section about him and Nelson was included in the report, calling it outside the scope of the investigation. The allegations are baseless and undermine the credibility of the report, he said.
After a closed session meeting the night of Oct. 4, council voted in the early morning hours Oct. 5 to launch an investigation of HR Director Tom Guajardo’s allegations of harassment, discrimination and illegal directives by Fournier.
