2 ICE agents under investigation for ‘untruthful statements’ about north Minneapolis shooting - 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS

Two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are on leave after new evidence contradicted their statements pertaining to a shooting in north Minneapolis last month.

The revelations led the U.S. Attorney’s Office to ask a judge to dismiss charges against two men who were accused of assaulting ICE agents on Jan. 14.

In a statement on Friday, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said further review of the case by ICE and the Department of Justice “revealed that sworn testimony provided by two separate officers appears to have made untruthful statements.”

The two ICE officers now face termination or possible criminal prosecution.

“Lying under oath is a serious federal offense,” Lyons said. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office is actively investigating these false statements.”

Witness accounts and video evidence indicate that the two men, Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis and Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna, ran inside a home after being chased by ICE and one of the agents shot through the door, hitting Sosa-Celis in the leg.

Those accounts challenged Homeland Security’s initial claims that an agent fired a shot in self-defense after being beaten with a shovel and a broomstick.

Critics say this is following a pattern seen all too often involving federal officials.
