27 years later, the murder of journalist whistleblower Tara Singh Hayer remains unsolved - Diya TV

SURREY, Canada (Diya TV) — Twenty-seven years after the assassination of journalist Tara Singh Hayer, his family still waits for justice. Hayer was the founder of the Indo-Canadian Times and a strong voice against violent extremism. He was shot and killed on Nov. 18, 1998, outside his home in Surrey, British Columbia. No one has ever been charged with the killing.

His family still remembers the night with painful clarity. His daughter-in-law, Isabelle, recalls the large pool of blood in the garage. His daughter Rupinder says she can’t erase the image from her mind. The memories remain vivid and heavy.

The lack of charges continues to confuse and frustrate the family. Hayer’s son Dave, a former Liberal MLA, says the situation feels unfair. Police investigated the murder for more than two decades. Yet the case remains open, with no arrests and no clear answers.

Press freedom advocates also question the lack of progress. Alexandra Ellerbeck of the Committee to Protect Journalists says murders of journalists are rare in Canada and the U.S. She believes people expect these crimes to be solved. She says justice in such cases protects free expression and ensures public trust.

Hayer was a persistent critic of extremist groups, including those tied to the 1985 Air India bombing that killed 331 people. He had agreed to testify in the Air India terrorism case. He told police he overheard a suspect confess years earlier. His cooperation made him a target.
