They say knowledge is power, but that comes at a cost for whistleblowers, even if they believe the payoff is worth the risk. Tech scandals are common, whether unintentionally or deliberately made public.
Many people have risked or will risk their careers and lives to speak out against wrongdoings in the tech industry and hold those involved accountable, no matter how rich and powerful.
While some whistleblowers prefer to stay anonymous, others reveal their identities to share their stories publicly. But have their revelations been worth the risk?
Who Is Considered a Whistleblower?
An individual who exposes illegal and unethical activities within a company or government body and informs authorities or the public, whether it’s a fraud, corruption, cover-ups, or other wrongdoings. Hence, the term, as they are blowing the whistle on the activities.
A whistleblower can be an employee, current or former, an insider with knowledge, or a perceptive hacker. Some may come forward voluntarily or required by law or internal policies. Though, many can be exposed and left with no other choice.
Whistleblowers risk being terminated, threatened, taken to court, or worse, despite their actions being motivated by upholding morality and accountability.
