'No one should be subjected to sexual harassment in order to earn a living'
A tribunal has found that a small business owner offered a new employee cash, rent money and daycare fees in exchange for sex, then fired her by text when she refused.
In an Aug. 4, 2026, decision, Dylan Snowdon, member of the Alberta Human Rights Commission (AHRC), found the owner of a small Alberta painting company sexually harassed an employee he supervised, then fired her after she refused his advances.
The AHRC ordered that the complainant’s name and initials would be kept out of the written human rights decisions.
The tribunal held the company and its owner jointly and severally liable for $50,000 in general damages and $24,121 in lost wages, plus interest.
The complainant began work as a painter for a small Alberta painting company on Jan. 12, 2023, with her partner, after the owner, also her supervisor, offered $20 an hour for the first month and $35 an hour after that. He told her by text that the business was "extremely busy every single day."
The owner asked the complainant to attend a job site alone on Jan. 19, 2023. When she arrived, he invited her into his van and proposed they begin having sex in exchange for raising her pay to $35 an hour. She testified she asked for time to think it over so she could leave safely, and when she declined, he said they could go to work.
