8 arrested at NYS Capitol after One Fair Wage rally; actress Susan Sarandon, guest speaker - CNYcentral.com

ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — Eight people were arrested at the Capitol Monday afternoon as tipped workers and advocates rallied for fair wages once and for all.

One of those people at the rally, who may have been one of those taken into custody is Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon.

Waitresses are among those workers, advocates claim the majority of those in the industry are mothers, and women of color.

"Tipped workers are the occupation with the highest rate of single mothers of any occupation in the United States,” said Saru Jayaraman, President of the One Fair Wage organization. “These are mostly waitresses trying to feed their children on tips."

Waitresses and family members rallied in support of the one fair wage act to allow tipped workers to earn minimum wage, something they say they've been left out of year after year.

Those rallying included eight people arrested for disorderly conduct by State Police when asked to move to a new location.

Advocates showed a giant Mother’s Day card they made for lawmakers, "We want to give you this letter that says please stop leaving us out,” one waitress said. “We want to be able to have the bare minimum to be honest, it's not even an extremely livable wage, it's just to make ends meet. Right now with one hour of work, we can only put one box of eggs in our houses."
