What’s happening: Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks killed nearly 3,000 people, baseless conspiracy theories about what happened are polluting online media.
In the days leading up to the anniversary, social media users have vigorously revived claims that the attacks were a “false flag” operation orchestrated by the U.S. and/or Israel to provide a pretext for war in the Middle East. Posts promoting these claims have collectively garnered 5.2 million views in just the past week.
