When Scott Campbell learned that his long-time friend had died last Friday, he wondered if his church would allow him to attend the funeral.
Would First Baptist Church Denton give an exemption to the cease-and-desist letter they recently sent Campbell, a whistleblower, banning him from church property?
The short answer: No.
Campbell, 69, grew up as the son of a deacon and was baptized at this Southern Baptist church in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. He kept his membership even when as an adult, he moved to Alaska. About 15 years ago, he returned to Texas and First Baptist.
Then in 2024, 32 former staff told a third-party investigator that Senior Pastor Jeff Williams created a hostile work environment, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported. A majority of the church’s personnel committee recommended church leaders fire Williams, who had pastored there for 28 years.

Instead, church leaders chose to keep Williams and overhaul the personnel committee. In November 2024, the Chronicle reported that church leaders categorized the complaints as merely an internal conflict.
