A new bill looks to enhance whistleblower protections for FBI employees - Federal News Network

  • There’s a growing effort in Congress to enhance whistleblower protections for FBI employees. A new bill from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), if enacted, would expand several portions of the existing whistleblower protections at the FBI. For one, the legislation would protect FBI agents who appeal adverse personnel decisions. The bill would also secure protections for agents who cooperate in whistleblower investigations. Grassley said his bill comes in response to what he described as whistleblower retaliation during the Biden administration.
  • A detailed Coast Guard investigation has found the 2023 Titan submarine disaster was mostly caused by the vessel owner ignoring safety standards. But the Coast Guard also found some gaps in its own oversight. The new report found the service lacks expertise in modern submersible technology as it’s evolved over the past several decades, and that its current standards and oversight programs are mostly based on surface ship designs. The Titan imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreckage site, killing all five people aboard.
  • The Trump administration continues to run afoul of the Impoundment and Control Act. The Government Accountability Office found the decision by the National Institutes of Health to terminate 1,800 grants violated the 1974 law governing the role of Congress and the executive branch when it comes to spending.
