ABC staff caught peddling false claims about News Corp - Sky News Australia

The ABC is among multiple media outlets caught peddling false allegations about the extent of News Corp’s reporting on the national broadcaster’s coronation controversy.

On Saturday, Guardian Australia incorrectly claimed there had been more than 150 mentions of the ABC’s “coronation coverage” and “Stan grant" by Sky News and The Australian in the two weeks following the broadcast.

The coverage of the historic event ultimately led to high-profile ABC presenter Stan Grant stepping down as host of Q+A.

In the days since, the unverified claim of “more than 150 articles” has been repeatedly quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald, Crikey, and high-profile ABC journalists, including Radio National breakfast host Patricia Karvelas.

However, independent research commissioned by The Australian on Tuesday revealed the true figure was far lower, with the publication having published just 15 articles on the subject (nine stories appeared in both print and online, with a further six published online only) between May 6 and May 20.

Sky News mentioned the subjects 63 times between May 6 and May 20, but that includes some occasions of which the keywords were mentioned multiple times in the same program or news item, according to Streem.
