The incorrect information made the rounds on social media
A Kildare county councillor has called out false claims which were made about her and shared on social media.
The false information related to Fianna Fáil Cllr Veralouise Behan, who represents the Athy Municipal District.
An online group falsely claimed that Cllr Behan had called for ‘future developments for houses to be made to suit Muslim individuals, to suit their way of life’.
The same group took issue with this (falsified) view while also highlighting the presence of homelessness in Ireland.
It is understood that the post has since been removed.
However, the Leinster Leader can reveal that, after investigation, no such comments were made by Cllr Behan.
When asked by the Leader for comment, Cllr Behan responded: “It’s like this; when a person or an organisation blatantly lies about you and involves others to collaborate and believe those lies, it speaks volumes about the extraordinary ability of some groups to exploit and manipulate people into targeting, in my case, a woman.
“Right now, across the country, there are thousands of people believing absolute lies about me.”
