Accused of making false statements against govt, Rajasthan RLD legislator faces privilege motion, gets Congress backing - The Indian Express

A breach of privilege motion was moved against Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) MLA Subhash Garg in the Assembly on Monday. The motion, presented by the government chief whip and Jalore MLA Jogeshwar Garg, alleged that the facts and issues raised by Subhash Garg in his adjournment motion on February 24 were false and misleading. The chief whip stated that Subhash Garg’s claims were a deliberate attempt to tarnish the government’s image without any supporting evidence. He argued that such actions amounted to contempt of the House and constituted a privilege violation.

The motion stemmed from Subhash Garg’s statements during Zero Hour, where he alleged that the Bharatpur administration in Lohagarh had issued notices to several families regarding road widening. He claimed that citizens were being threatened, their homes demolished, and many forced to sell their properties under duress.

However, Jogeshwar Garg refuted these allegations, asserting that no such notices had been issued and labeled the claims as baseless. He, therefore, proposed a breach of privilege motion against Subhash Garg.The Congress strongly opposed the motion. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully argued that penalising MLAs for raising public concerns would discourage discussions in the Assembly. He emphasised that legislators voice issues reported by their constituents and that a lack of complete information should not warrant disciplinary action.
