Activists, advocates demand action against Madurai Adheenam for his ‘false claims’ targeting a religion - The Hindu

Condemning the Madurai Adheenam and his associates for spreading “false information” regarding his car accident with a purported communal motive, Madurai Madha Nallinakka Makkal Kootamaippu, headed by advocates and activists, submitted a letter to State government here on Friday.

Advocates K. Vanchinathan, Henri Tiphagne, activist Mee. Tha. Pandian and others, who represented the forum, said the Madurai Adheenam and his associates were making false claims about the accident with a religious and political motive.

Despite the police issuing the CCTV footage evidence of the incident which showed that the Adheenam’s SUV proceeding towards Ulundurpet at high speed brushed against a car that was passing through a barricade on that stretch, the Adheenam’s claim displayed a targeted accusation on a religion, Mr. Vanchinathan added.

As the staged incident could be understood only as their ploy to create communal tension in the State, they should be booked for making false claims and for intending to threaten the unity of the country, he noted.

He said the Adheenam should be booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for acting with an intent to threaten the sovereignty of the nation and for provoking with intent to causing a riot-like situation.

The Adheenam had earlier alleged that an attempt was made on his life while he was on his way to attend a religious event in Chennai. He accused the people of a particular religion for the accident.
