Air India Flight AI171, en route to London Gatwick, departed from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 pm. Within minutes, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, crashed into the Meghani Nagar residential area of the city. The aircraft slammed into a medical college hostel and exploded into a fireball.

The crash has brought fresh focus to warnings issued by Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour, who, in early 2024, raised concerns about the structural integrity of the 787 Dreamliner.
