A bill that would place safeguards on AI developers, with whistleblower protections and other measures to stem catastrophic risks, was approved Tuesday by a California Senate panel.
Sen. Scott Wiener (D) authored the measure (SB 53), a slimmed down version of his failed 2024 legislation. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed the latter bill in September, claiming it was too burdensome for the state’s dominant AI industry.
