What’s happening: Anti-Israel social media users are claiming that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a prominent pro-Israel lobbying group, has approval power over American history textbooks, giving the group control over how history is taught in the U.S.
The claim is just the latest false narrative directed in recent months against AIPAC, which, according to an August 2026 New York Times analysis, is affiliated with six political action committees that have already spent more than $67 million on the November midterm elections supporting pro-Israel candidates. The group has become a flashpoint in many races.
A closer look: In late August, anti-Israel social media users began claiming that U.S. history textbooks cannot be published without AIPAC’s approval. Without citing evidence, the users presented the claim as proof that pro-Israel forces have far too much influence in U.S. politics and education, giving them an outsized role in shaping young minds.
