A controversial international businessman is facing renewed scrutiny after an investigative report alleged that he built close relationships with Indonesia’s top political and military leadership while presenting himself as someone with connections to the US intelligence community. The allegations center on Gaurav Srivastava, whose companies reportedly secured a series of preliminary defense procurement agreements worth potentially tens of billions of dollars despite having little or no track record in the defense industry.
The claims emerged from an investigation by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and its Indonesian media partner Tempo. According to the report, Srivastava cultivated ties with senior Indonesian officials, including current President Prabowo Subianto during the period when Prabowo served as Indonesia’s minister of defense. The investigation also describes Srivastava’s relationship with Prabowo’s brother, prominent businessman Hashim Djojohadikusumo, and raises questions about financial transactions connected to those relationships.
Srivastava has denied allegations that he falsely claimed to be affiliated with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). On his website, he argues that such accusations are fabricated and form part of what he describes as a coordinated disinformation campaign orchestrated by his former business associate, Dutch businessman Niels Troost.
