A 38-year-old Tongaat Home Affairs employee, who is alleged to have been a whistleblower, and was set to testify in a serious criminal case in a few days, was gunned down, shot six times, during a drive-by shooting on Gopalall Hurbans Road in Tongaat, on Thursday, 25 May.

According to sources, a manhunt is underway to find the suspects accused of killing the Department of Home Affairs employee who was set to testify in a serious criminal case in a few days. Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said they were called to the scene after several witnesses reported shots being fired at a grey VW Polo on Thursday afternoon.

“On arrival, RUSA members discovered paramedics from a private ambulance service examining the driver of the vehicle. The Department of Home Affairs employee sustained approximately six gunshot wounds to her body and one shot to her head. She was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram.

He said according to witnesses, a male passenger disembarked from the vehicle while it was in motion. “The man drew a firearm and fired multiple shots at the female. Her vehicle veered off the road and crashed into construction barriers. The suspect thereafter fled on foot,” said Balram.

He added that the motive for the murder has not been confirmed at this stage and that Tongaat SAPS are investigating the matter.
