An overview of several new Missouri laws now in effect in 2023 - krcgtv.com

New Bloomfield — Several new Missouri laws are now in place once the calendar flipped over to 2023.

The most notable laws that are now in effect are changes made to the Missouri state income tax and minimum wage.

Senate Bill 3 dropped the state's income tax rate from 5.3% to 4.9%.

From $100 to $1000, the law also increases the income amounts exempted from state taxes.

Missouri's minimum wage will increase to $12 per hour.

Through 2023, The measure will increase the state's minimum wage by 85 cents per hour each year.

Private businesses in the state will have to pay the new hourly rate. Retail and service businesses are exempt if it makes less than $500,000 in gross annual sales.

The state minimum wage law does not apply to public employers.

Boone County and Columbia will now enact a "Wayfair Tax".

That tax is set at 1.75% for Boone County residents and an additional 2% for Columbia residents.

These are for purchases made on all items purchased online from out of the state.

Over the summer, Governor Parson signed a law that made it a misdemeanor if people experiencing homelessness slept on state-owned land.

The law stops a portion of state and federal funds from being used to create affordable housing. Now, the money will be redirected toward the building of temporary camps with both mental health and substance-abuse related treatments.

The bill also grants the state the ability to sue local governments if they choose to not enforce the law.
