We have a high bar when it comes to fact-checking White House press secretaries. They are supposed to spin, dissemble and mislead. We prefer to focus on policymakers, not spinmeisters.
But the White House’s campaign against the Congressional Budget Office, the nonpartisan agency that vets the cost of major legislation, is veering into the ridiculous. The White House is mad because CBO concluded that the One Big Beautiful Bill of tax and spending cuts will add trillions to the national debt over 10 years. The House narrowly passed the House resolution, and some GOP senators have balked — as has billionaire Elon Musk. So, the bill’s in political trouble.
Never mind that similar conclusions have been reached from right- and left-leaning organizations, including the Tax Foundation, the Penn Wharton Budget Model, the Manhattan Institute and the Center for American Progress. As the official scorekeeper for Congress, the CBO has clout — so the White House decided to attack the messenger.
