ANZ’s top lawyer described one of its traders as “quite calculating” to then-chief executive Mike Smith and chairman David Gonski, accusing him of producing a “transparently false story” to acquire whistleblower protection while regulators investigated the company’s rigging of interest rates.
The trader in question, Etienne Alexiou, was ultimately sacked in September 2015 and has sued the bank for unfair dismissal. The bank says his dismissal was because he had breached its code of conduct when sending profanity-laden messages, but Alexiou claims it was because he blew the whistle on ANZ’s manipulation of the bank bill swap rate to book higher profits.
