A closer look: In late July 2026, social media users began claiming that Apple’s latest iOS 26 update reversed iPhone users’ privacy preferences by turning on features including location tracking, Siri audio recording, and photo recovery for users who had turned them off. Most of the users advancing the claim appear to be based in South Asia.
The earliest example of the claim NewsGuard identified was a July 24 Threads post by Bangladesh-based user @jasoncoderx, who said: “Apple just secretly turned your iPhone into a tracking device.
