LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — An Arkansas attorney says he represents a witness with "firsthand knowledge" of public records that were altered by the Governor's Office before being released in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
The serious allegation came to light in a letter sent on Friday from Rogers attorney Tom Mars to State Sen. Jimmy Hickey Jr., (R) District 4, who recently requested an audit of Governor Sarah Huckabee Sander's Office with regard to its purchase of a podium reportedly costing $19,029.25, after Arkansas blogger and attorney Matt Campbell requested documents through FOIA concerning the expensive transaction.
Mars, a former Walmart executive, served as director of the Arkansas State Police under Sanders' father, former Governor Mike Huckabee.
In his letter to Hickey, Mars asserted that his witness wished to remain anonymous and could provide "clear and convincing evidence" of the Governor's Office altering or knowingly withholding documents from release after being FOIAed.
"I am willing to arrange for my client to give a confidential statement to the legislative auditors, under oath or otherwise, and allow them to review relevant documents in my client's possession," Mars said in the letter.
These documents will substantiate my client's firsthand knowledge of how certain persons in the Governor's Office, including the Governor's Communications Director, Alexa Henning, interfered with the production of non-exempt FOIA documents TSS intended...
