LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Legislation that rolls back several child labor protections in Arkansas has passed and signed into law by Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
The Youth Hiring Act of 2023, or House Bill 1410, notably removes a mandate that youths under the age of 16 need a work certificate involving written consent from a parent or guardian, in order for employment.
The bill was passed the Ark. House of Representatives 94-4 and the Senate 34-0.
Under the Division of Labor and the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education, employment certificates for children has required proof of the child’s age, a description of the work and work schedule and a parent or legal guardian’s written consent.
The bill raised objections from some critics.
It emerged during a time when law authorities are concentrating on finding and prosecuting child trafficking crimes.
A spokesperson for the governor said Sanders views the permit as, "Arbitrary for parents to get permission from the government for their child to get a job," Alexa Henning said.
