Florida passed Senate Bill 1718 in May of 2023. The bill, which many refer to as the "Anti-Immigration law" requires that private Florida businesses with over 25 employees use E-Verify to confirm that an employee is in legal compliance with work authorization requirements.
Why Some Business Owners and Immigrants are Worried About the Impacts of the New Bill: Some business owners in fields such as agriculture, hospitality, and construction have expressed concerns that the bill may negatively impact their labor force and make it more difficult to conduct business.
Additionally, some immigrants who have worked in the state of Florida for decades are now considering leaving the state because they fear the impacts of the bill on their extended families.
Some of them explain that although they are in the United States legally, some members of their families are not. And the new bill makes it a felony to transport a minor or more than 5 undocumented immigrants in the state.
A woman named Antonia told USA Today that she has over 80 extended family members that live close to her community. She owns a home and is conflicted about leaving Florida because her "life savings" are invested in her home. But she worries about her family, telling USA Today:
“We’re mixed. Some have papers, others don’t.”
