Ashe-Nadrowski Calls for $15 an Hour Minimum Wage for Bayonne Employees. Adjustment Would Only Impact Three Full Time Workers, Davis Campaign Responds - TAPinto.net

BAYONNE, NJ - Following up on her previous calls for action, Bayonne City Council President, and mayoral candidate, Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski announced her support for an immediate minimum wage increase for Bayonne municipal employees to $15 per hour.

“A $15 minimum wage for Bayonne City employees is a step in the right direction not only for our employees, but for our local economy,” Ashe-Nadrowski said in a statement. “City employees don’t just work in Bayonne, they live here, spend their money here and raise their families here. An investment in them is an investment in the success of our whole community.”

The $15 minimum wage is part of a national debate with proponents arguing that inflation and a normal rise in cost of living over many decades has caused workers to lose ground when it comes to remaining above the poverty level. Although the State of New Jersey has already increased the minimum wage, many argue that $15 per hour will bring workers back up to a livable wage.

The most significant argument against this wage increase is that when imposed on businesses, those businesses might hire fewer people to control costs. Government wage increases, however, have proven successful in other municipalities and on a state and county level, helping these institutions to retain quality employers who might otherwise flee to jobs in the private sector.
