Ashleigh Plumptre dismisses fake Facebook account over WAFCON exclusion claims - Business News Nigeria

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has dismissed a social media impersonation after fraudsters used her identity to spread false claims about her alleged exclusion from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The British-born Nigerian international, who chose to represent Nigeria despite being eligible for England, moved quickly to distance herself from the reports, warning fans and followers not to engage with the fraudulent accounts.

The false claims, which circulated on Facebook, suggested that Plumptre was unhappy after being omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 WAFCON scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 16.

“Awful false accounts. I’ve posted on my IG and X for people to report. They are using my identity and scamming people. I’m currently contacting someone in Saudi Arabia to help me take these accounts down because this has been happening for well over a year now,” Plumptre said.

She added that efforts were underway to report and remove the fake accounts, which she said have repeatedly used her identity to mislead the public.

The controversy comes amid heightened attention around squad selection ahead of the 2026 WAFCON, which was originally scheduled to begin on March 17 before being postponed by the Confederation of African Football due to logistical, commercial and other unforeseen circumstances.
