Ashurst fortifies Asia labour team with new Singapore head - Law.asia

Ashurst has recruited a new partner in Singapore to head the firm’s Asia employment practice, with litigator Clarence Ding joining from Simmons & Simmons, bringing more than 15 years of experience advising on employment-related litigation.

Stephen Woodbury, Ashurst’s global head of employment based in Sydney, told Asia Business Law Journal that more so than ever, clients were demanding sophisticated and integrated solutions from their external lawyers.

“This meant law firms with a truly pan-Asia practice and who were able to deliver on this offered a unique value proposition. Ashurst has always had a strong footprint across Asia, with a dedicated Asia employment practice since 2011. Clarence’s appointment demonstrates our continued commitment to the region,” said Woodbury.

The Sydney-based global employment practice head added that, with Singapore being a centre for areas including finance, technology, energy and healthcare, and where many companies had their APAC offices, it made a lot of sense to situate the Asia employment head position in the Lion City.

Ding, a litigator who specialises in employment and immigration issues as well as compliance reviews and internal investigations, previously served as head of Simmons & Simmons’ Singapore employment practice. Earlier in his legal career, he had also practised as an associate at Allen & Gledhill and Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow.
