Attorney, Democratic chair threatens lawsuit against county clerk - Davison Index - Davisonindex

FLINT — More than a month after it failed to collect enough valid signatures on petitions to recall a Davison school board member, a member of the Committee for School Board Integrity is threatening to sue the county clerk for alleged defamation of character.

Attorney Ashley Prew, a member of the committee and the chairperson of the Genesee Democratic Party, sent a letter to Genesee County Clerk John Gleason Monday demanding he retract statements he made in which he claimed the recall group was “harassing and intimidating” local clerks and a claim he made that the committee is pressuring his office to “break the law.”

Prew argues in her letter she engaged in the following activities protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution:

• Participating in a recall petition effort as a petition circulator for the campaign to recall Matthew Smith.

• Submitting a Freedom of Information Act request regarding phone records relating to Gleason’s duties as county clerk for the recall of Smith.

• Engaging in political patronage by making public comment at a county commissioner’s public meeting.

She said Gleason took adverse actions against her in retaliation by threatening her with “potential adverse media statements” on Dec. 21; a Feb. 17 press conference where he allegedly told media outlets false statements including claims she was “harassing and intimidating” local clerks to change the outcome of the discarded signatures from...
