Social media giant Meta has settled a landmark US case over social media addiction agreeing to pay the equivalent of $23 billion Australian and adding child safety measures to its Facebook and Instagram app.

Meta has not admitted to any wrongdoing and throughout the trial maintained it had worked for years to make its social media tools safer.

Arturo Bejar is a former Meta executive turned whistleblower and he was a key witness in the trial which claimed the platforms were harmful to children.
