Austin ISD slated to approve fiscal budget that could give employers ... - KEYE TV CBS Austin

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Independent School district is looking at accepting a $1.86 billion dollar budget. However, AISD says they don’t get to spend all that money because half of it goes to recapture.

If its 2024 fiscal year budget is approved, it would give a historic pay raise for all district employees. 87% of AISD’s budget is invested in employees, the district says. With the rising cost of living and inflation the district felt it was important to give employees adequate financial compensation.

During a board meeting Thursday evening, Kevin Foster, the Vice President of the Board of Trustees for AISD says the district is taking an “aggressive approach” when it comes to supporting teachers and staff finically. This assistance comes in the form of a significant compensation package that gives teachers a 7% raise and a $4 an hour increase for all classified employees, bumping minimum wage to $20 an hour.

“We’re raising the floor for everybody trying to combat the unaffordability of Austin and trying to show love and respect for the people that care directly for our kids,” said Foster.

During the meeting multiple trustees brought up what they called a lack of support from the Texas legislature when it comes to school allotment funding and other needed assistance.
