Australia urged to introduce financial rewards for whistleblowers - The Mandarin

A Human Rights Law Centre report argues offering whistleblowers financial rewards would bolster regulatory and enforcement systems.

Australia should introduce a financial rewards scheme for whistleblowers modelled on overseas programs that have helped regulators recover billions of dollars, a new report recommends.

The Human Rights Law Centre’s report, Rewarding Australian Whistleblowers: Design Options for Whistleblower Incentive Programs, urges the federal government to consider a rewards scheme to strengthen Australia’s regulatory and enforcement systems.

Former ACCC chair Professor Allan Fels said “rewards schemes are good investments” and powerful policy tools.

“The insider information needed to investigate and bring enforcement action against wrongdoers is expensive and difficult to attain,” wrote Fels in the report foreword.
