Australians back stronger whistleblower protections, NACC transparency - The Mandarin

An Australian Institute survey reveals overwhelming public support for legal reforms, pardons, and transparency in anti-corruption efforts.

A growing number of Australians want whistleblowers to have proper protection to help stamp out corruption, a poll has found.

More than 2,000 responded to The Australian Institute’s survey on whistleblowing and anticorruption institutions in Australia. More than four in five (84%) said they wanted to see a whistleblower protection authority to expose suspect misconduct.

“This is higher than the 79% of Australians who supported this in 2023, which included 35% strong support,” the Institute’s polling report says.

Such an authority can only function with a strong legal framework. 86% of respondents agree that stronger legal protections are required for whistleblowers, who are described by 84% of respondents as making “Australia a better place.”

Two prominent whistleblowers were also the subject of poll questions with 77% of respondents stating that the government should end the prosecution of Richard Boyle, the ATO whistleblower who exposed the use of harsh debt collection methods against struggling businesses.

Imprisoned former military lawyer David McBride also got support from 68% of people surveyed — those respondents want the government to pardon McBride.
