A man who worked in the field of autonomous vehicles is suing his employer for whistleblower retaliation, alleging he was wrongfully fired in 2024 for exposing the dangers of monitoring such technology in such dangerous events as a street takeover.
Daniel Stein’s Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit against Transdev Alternative Services also alleges intentional infliction of emotional distress. Stein seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages in the suit brought Thursday.
A Transdev representative said Friday that the company does not comment on pending litigation.
Transdev contracts with Waymo to provide autonomous vehicles. Stein was hired in August 2023 and in his job with Transdev, the plaintiff was a Waymo roadside assistant whose duties included supporting Waymo vehicles by monitoring and them and following them through a support vehicle, responding to any issues or roadside incidents that arose.
“Plaintiff was required to follow exact routes provided by the company-issued phone and he could not deviate from the routes,” the suit states.
Stein was in a support vehicle with a co-worker on Jan. 15, 2024, abiding by GPS navigation instructions on his work phone, when he was accidentally directed into a “chaotic and dangerous” street takeover in downtown Los Angeles involving about 200 vehicles and a crowd of pedestrians, the suit states.
