Problems continue to mount for the troubled clearing bank

A former employee at Bank of London has been awarded nearly 40,000 after an industrial tribunal found she was wrongfully dismissed over whistleblowing.

The tribunal in Northern Ireland ruled that Julie Jamison, who was paid a basic annual salary of 95,000, was unfairly let go after informing senior management about alleged malpractice, including that a convicted fraudster had been hired without the necessary background checks.

On December 12, judge Noel Kelly wrote: “The unanimous judgment of the tribunal is that the respondent automatically and unfairly dismissed the claimant and subjected her to public interest disclosure detriments.”

The judgment, which the clearing bank is appealing, comes after the firm replaced its chief executive in October last year and as it awaits the outcome of investigations by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority into “historical matters” at the firm.

Jamison, who worked in the bank’s Belfast office as an enterprise risk manager, said she had her employment unexpectedly terminated via a Microsoft Teams call in April 2023.

She later lodged an internal grievance, claiming she was unfairly dismissed after previously reporting alleged negligence at the firm, including that a fraudster, who had been sentenced to three and half years in prison, had been hired without the proper pre-employment inspections.
