BBC Director General Tim Davie has announced his resignation following controversy surrounding allegations of political bias and a scandal over the broadcaster’s editing of a speech by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Davie confirmed on Sunday that his decision to step down was “entirely my own” and said he would remain in his role for several months to ensure a smooth transition.
The BBC’s Chief Executive of News, Deborah Turness, also resigned.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy thanked Davie for “guiding the BBC through a period of major change,” describing his departure as the close of “a challenging chapter” for the institution.
The resignations come amid a deepening crisis over a BBC Panorama documentary that broadcast an edited version of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech, creating the impression that he had urged supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol. The edit, later revealed to be misleading, sparked accusations of “institutionalized bias” within the BBC.
The fallout has reignited wider concerns over the BBC’s impartiality, including its reporting on the Israel-Hamas war. The Board of Deputies of British Jews welcomed the resignations, saying they “must mark the beginning of a process of deep cultural renewal.” The group accused the corporation of “repeated failures” in its Middle East coverage and of ignoring internal complaints of anti-Israel bias.
