EAST WINDSOR, NJ – The East Windsor Township Police Department (EWTPD) issued a warning to the public to beware of a telephone scam that makes false claims about jury duty.
The EWTPD says that the scammers pose as members of law enforcement or the court system who claim that the recipient has missed jury duty or failed to appear in court. They often provide fake warrant numbers to then threaten an arrest if an immediate payment is not made or personal information is not provided.
The Department stressed that a jury duty notice will always arrive by official mail and not via threatening phone calls.
Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler recently issued a similar warning about scammers posing as members of law enforcement. Using a spoofed (fake) 609 area code, fake email addresses, and fake website links, the scammers pose as senior Mercer County Sheriff's Officers such as a Court Division Sergeant. They claim that there is an urgent issue involving an arrest warrant, missing grand jury duty, or other legal matters, and they demand immediate payment or provide personal information, such as bank account details and Social Security numbers.
It is important to beware of warning signs of a scam, says EWTPD. Notably, courts and government agencies will never call you to demand payment over the phone or ask for your Social Security number, date of birth, or banking information over the phone.
