Cities and individuals would be able to pursue civil action against the gun industry for damages caused by firearms under H.R. 2814.
The bill would also make gun trace data available for use during any civil legal or administrative proceedings.
The legislation “would restore the rights of victims of gun violence to hold the firearm industry accountable when it acts carelessly and disregards reasonable safeguards that would protect the American public,” House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said in a statement at a July 20 markup.
Committee Republicans opposed the measure.
