Bill gives Tennessee state employees 5 days paid to tend to kids with COVID-19, closures - WTVC

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--A proposed Tennessee law would give state employees paid time off to care for children if the child is infected by COVID-19 or if the child is forced to stay home due to a school closure.

SB2672/HB2723 is sponsored by Senator Sara Kyle (D-Memphis-D30) and Representative Larry J. Miller (D-Memphis-D88).

The law would apply to officers and members of state agencies, boards, and other departments. Individuals would be entitled to 5 days of paid leave which does not count against their normal sick time. The bill states the paid leave would take place "e in the event that a minor child contracts COVID-19, or if the child's school or daycare facility is forced to close due to COVID-19, and the parent officer or employee must stay home with the child to provide for the child's care."

The bill passed in the State Senate on Wednesday and will go before the House Finance, Ways, and Means Subcommittee next week.
