A Black Pasadena police officer filed a claim against the city on Thursday stating that she was retaliated against after trying to de-escalate a situation involving another officer and the son of a man fatally shot by deputies.
The claim, often the first step toward a lawsuit, alleges whistleblower retaliation, discrimination, harassment, failure to take corrective action and other issues.
Officer Taisyn Crutchfield, who was placed on administrative leave and has since returned to active duty, was not told of the findings of an investigation into the incident but told that she will face discipline, her lawyer Bradley Gage said during a Friday news conference held in front of the Pasadena Police Department.
Taisyn Crutchfield did not attend and cannot discuss the case, according to Gage.
“It would open her up to more retaliation,” he said.
Tony Crutchfield said he was there to represent his daughter, who he described as a good woman who wanted to be a police officer, with the goal of bridging the gap between police and the community.
“She is also a Black American,” Gage said. “Sadly, her race has eclipsed her other achievements, subjecting her to discrimination and retaliation at the Pasadena Police Department.”
The Pasadena police chief, Gene Harris, is also Black.
