Bonnie Crombie Resigns as Ontario Liberal Leader: Key Employee Takeaways - Samfiru Tumarkin LLP

What’s Happening?

Despite surviving a confidence vote, Bonnie Crombie announced that she will step down as leader of the Ontario Liberal Party once a successor has been chosen.

“Even though I received a majority of support from the delegates, I believe it is the best decision for the Ontario Liberal Party to facilitate an orderly transition towards a leadership vote,” Crombie said in a statement.

During a convention on Sept. 14, she signalled that she planned to remain at the helm. However, Crombie announced her resignation just hours after meeting with the party executive.

The Ontario Liberals are set to face their third leadership race since 2018.

Premier’s Response

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ontario Premier Doug Ford wished his political opponent “all the best in her next chapter.”

“I want to thank [Bonnie] for her many years of public service as an MP, mayor, and leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. Politics demands a lot of personal sacrifice, including time away from family and loved ones,” Ford’s post reads.
