LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Nevadans will be voting on three ballot questions in the 2022 midterms that would amend the state constitution.
Ballot question two is a minimum wage amendment that would make $12 an hour the baseline pay for all workers in the Silver State. Under current law, Nevada's minimum wage is already increasing 75 cents a year through 2024, when it will hit $12.
"This is not changing the minimum wage. The minimum wage is already going up," said Annette Magnus, executive director with Battle Born Progress, a progressive group that helped push the question through legislative approval in Carson City.
"So this is very much a fairness issue in setting a standard for a minimum wage and making sure all employees get paid the same minimum wage in our state," Magnus said.
Supporters like Magnus said it would bring about three important changes to Nevada's current minimum wage laws.
First, it enshrines a $12 minimum wage into the state constitution. If politicians wanted to decrease it in the future, it would have to go through the lengthy Nevada constitutional amendment process.
Second, it would equal out the minimum wage for all workers in Nevada. Currently, the state operates on a two-tier system where employers who offer some form of health care coverage can pay their workers one dollar less per hour.
Right now, the minimum wage is $9.50 an hour for those with the health option and $10.50 for those without.
