A Brentwood woman has been sentenced after admitting to defrauding Medicare and other government health care programs out of nearly $7 million through fraudulent claims, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee.
Helen Boerman, 48, was sentenced Sept. 10 to 42 months after pleading guilty to the scheme involving false claims submitted through Brentwood Eye Care. She was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release and pay $6,970,583.50 in restitution, along with a $100 special assessment.
According to court documents, Boerman used her practice, Brentwood Eye Care, to submit false Medicare claims over approximately three and a half years.
Among the fraudulent claims were requests for payment for services on dates when patients did not receive them. Boerman also submitted claims for wound care products that had not been purchased or used. Investigators said she split wound care products that were intended for single use.
In one instance, evidence shows Brentwood Eye Care submitted Medicare claims for two patients showing wound care products were placed on May 20, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27, 2022. Appointment records showed the patients were only seen on May 20, 24 and 27.
