BRIDGEPORT, Ala — A whistleblower complaint filed from within the Bridgeport Police Department alleges multiple instances of corruption and abuse of power by the department's leadership, dating back as far as 2021.
The document was sent last week to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). It focuses primarily on Bridgeport Police Chief Lee Henegar.
The letter accuses Henegar of tampering with evidence and leaving it unsecured, cruel conduct, and off-duty misconduct. Additionally, the whistleblower alleges that Henegar gave unlawful orders, misappropriated city funds, and endangered public and officer safety.
According to the complaint, Henegar is frequently out of the office while holding the only key to the department's evidence room.
It reads, in part: I write to you as a last resort. I truly love Bridgeport and want nothing more than to protect and serve its citizens, visitors, businesses, and all who pass through. I believe that addressing and correcting the issues set out in this Declaration will greatly enhance my and my fellow BPD officers' ability to do just that.
Henegar could not be reached for comment on Wednesday. City staff said he was out of the office and unavailable.
