A Black Bridgestone tire plant employee who made multiple complaints that her colleagues tampered with her machine didn’t provide sufficient evidence that the alleged wrongdoings supporting her hostile work environment and retaliation claims were racially motivated, the Fourth Circuit ruled Tuesday.
Laverne McIver has worked at Bridgestone’s Wilson, N.C., plant since 1996, and witnessed or heard about racist events throughout her employment, the court said. These include a noose on the machine of two Black employees, two racist drawings of Trayvon Martin in the bathrooms, and two monkeys made of tires hanging in the plant.
