Arabic version: تم العثور على مزاعم المتحف البريطاني بشأن إزالة ‘فلسطين’ غير صحيحة
The British Museum has been accused of making false claims regarding its removal of the terms “Palestine,” “Palestinian,” and “Israelite occupation” from its displays. An investigation by Middle East Eye revealed that these changes were made in direct response to lobbying efforts in 2024.
In February 2026, the museum defended its decision by stating that “audience testing” indicated the term “Palestine” was “no longer meaningful.” However, according to Middle East Eye, a freedom of information request has confirmed that no such testing or visitor research was conducted regarding the term.
The conflicting statements from the museum have raised questions about the motivations behind the changes. Emails from the museum indicate that the alterations to displays, some dating back to 7,500 BCE, were influenced by complaints from organizations and prominent individuals supportive of Israel between October and December 2024.
This revelation raises concerns about the transparency of the museum’s practices and the potential impact of external pressures on its exhibitions.
