Brown to Uber: Stop Exploiting Your Workers, Treat Them as Full Employees - Senator Sherrod Brown

A Washington Post Investigation Details Uber’s Efforts to Skirt Existing Laws and Regulations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) sent a letter to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi calling on him to stop exploiting Uber drivers and to start respecting the work they do to help Uber succeed. Brown urged the company to recognize its drivers as employees so they are no longer denied a minimum wage, overtime pay, or collective bargaining rights. This letter follows a series of Washington Post articles that highlight how far the company has gone to defy regulations, evade accountability, and mistreat its workers.

“Americans work hard. Compared to their global peers, Americans work longer hours with fewer days off. Yet far too many Americans feel like they and their families can’t get ahead because the system is stacked against them—and it is. App-based gig workers, including Uber drivers, struggle to make ends meet. And rather than supporting its workers, Uber continues to exploit its drivers for company profit,” Brown wrote in his letter to Uber’s CEO. “Your drivers are putting in the work, driving long hours day after day. This work deserves the dignity of fair compensation and the protections of employee status.”
